The 2025 edition of Barrel-Aged Darkness goes deep into the woods.
Every year, we age our beloved imperial stout and release it the following spring. This year, the barrels in question are Elijah Craig bourbon barrels, which impart flavor and aromatics from the oak and the previous occupant to the receptive Darkness base.
But that’s not all! We took an extra step by also maturing it on French Oak from our friends at Creative Oak. They supplied the wood for our fantastic Darkness Day 2024 collab with Revolution Brewing, and we’re thrilled to work with them again.
The final product is full-bodied with substantial chocolate, brown sugar, and molasses notes, along with abundant woody oak character.
It’s now available on draft and in boxed 16-oz. cans, and while it’s worth cellaring, drinking it right away is understandable and encouraged.
Our 2025 Darkness Artist is…(drum roll please)…John Bivens! An award-winning visual storyteller, John is a native of the Quad Cities area who now calls the Twin Cities home. John makes comics and teaches at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and Dakota County Technical College.
John has literally been an artist his whole life (“I was just a kid who never stopped drawing”) with an abiding love for schlocky ‘80s horror movies. In other words, he gets the whole Darkness aesthetic.

This month marks the 15th birthday of Surly Gives A Damn, our brewery`s charitable arm! Led by the almighty Mary Sellke, it`s our way of giving back to the community that`s built us up.
This week, we went back to where it all started--The Food Group in New Hope, site of SGAD`s first event. Damn right there was a sheet cake.
If you`d like to mark the occasion yourself, we have a couple options coming up, each of which supports your friends and neighbors and comes with a free beer/beverage. The classic win-win!
