2017 Barrel-Aged Darkness Arrives

Beer Release

It’s nice to be able to answer the questions you get on social media in a positive, affirmative manner. Sometimes you simply can’t: To the person on Instagram who asked us to distribute Furious to all 50 states and sell it out of pop machines, the former will take some time, and the latter is almost definitely against the law. Sorry you had to find out in such a public forum, zekedankhop69.

However, to the many people asking us when 2017 Barrel-Aged Darkness would be available, the news is better: It’s rolling out this week at your preferred craft beer outlet.

(We know it’s 2018, but it gets its name from the fact that it’s 2017 Darkness. We get confused, too. Our spreadsheets hate us.)

This Darkness variant spent three-plus months aging in rye whiskey barrels from Woodford Reserve. The barrels are fresh from the distillery, and this is the very first time they’ve been used for beer. The rye whiskey effect is pronounced, and adding these oaky, spicy, highly aromatic elements to the already fantastic Darkness profile make it a remarkable beer.

The finer details:

  • If you need a refresher on 2017 Darkness: Waves of chocolate, coffee, cherry, raisin, and toffee flavors with a Warrior, Amarillo, and Simcoe hop bill.
  • The label art is a gold-hued variation on Adam Sward’s Baba Yaga from the 2017 Darkness bottle.
  • 12% ABV. It’s a sipper.
  • Going to most Surly markets.
